What Was Life Like Before Cable TV

03 Aug

Can you remember a time without cable TV? There was a time when most televisions only received channels two, four, five, seven, nine, eleven, and thirteen. And then you could get the public broadcast station on some channel in the double digits. And if you had an antenna on the roof or on the set itself you had to move that around to get a good reception.

You would go around the neighborhood and of course see one on each house. How else could anyone get television reception? Well, you could have the rabbit ears antenna. But you had to constantly adjust those for good reception. Now it is the box that brings us the broadcast from the cable company’s tower.

They were out of range of the network broadcast radio waves. But then companies realized that if they could show others how to make money off TV reception then cable television would be the mainstay. They showed politicians that the government could make a lot of money from taxing the cable companies. That tax would be passed on the consumer of course.

And then stations were created to broadcast different content from what is now known as network television. And because the cable company sold the idea that they would share their membership fees with those stations the stations soon put together content to feed to the cable companies and then feed to their customers.

Before this cable TV never took off because no one could figure out how to make money on the deal. But today cable television is a multi billion dollar industry. If you check your cable bill you will see that a percentage of it goes towards state, county, and city taxes.

All the government has to do is allow the cable company to broadcast in their area. It is simply an issue of property rights as they control the air space or at least the zoning of it.

The broadcasters of the stations provide the content and they are paid by the sponsors of their programs, those wonderfully clever and ever so enjoyable commercials we get to watch between our programs pay the broadcasters for the time they spend putting together the content. By the way the broadcasters are starting to demand more of the revenue from the cable company’s profits.

And because the cable company’s like the amount of profits they make, expect your cable bill to go up to pay the broadcaster’s demand. We will bare the brunt of this demand not the cable company. But where would we be without the cable TV? Well, most of us would be stuck with seven channels. But that was not so bad when you think of it.

The networks actually had some pretty good shows on back then. It seems now that TV programs are made so they can be sold for syndication to the cable TV broadcasters. It is not a question of quality but a question of syndication availability… And of course a question about how much money various groups can make off your TV watching.
